Documentation for use of caret (^) in serials prediction

    • Article Type: General
    • Product: Aleph
    • Product Version: 18.01

    Description:
Is there any documentation on the use of the "^" (caret) in the 853 field for enumeration with no captions? We have had requests from several customers for documentation, and I cannot find anything in the Doc Portal.

    Resolution:
    Publications that are lacking enumeration:

    1) If the publication entirely lacks enumeration, you can use either of the two following options:
1.1) Use caret sign ^ instead of enumeration in 853 field, and leave enumeration subfields in 853X blank.
1.2) Place data from chronology subfields in enumeration subfields, and leave chronology subfields blank.

    2) If the publication lacks first level of enumeration, but has second level of enumeration, you must use the ALEPH caret ^ convention for prediction as follows:
Place a ^ sign in s.f. $a of the 853 field, and any numeric value in s.f. $a of the 853X field; this value is ignored by the system when building issue description.

Note: Use of the caret sign ^ is an ALEPH convention an (which is NOT compatible with MARC standards).

    Additional Information

enumeration, first level, second level, pattern, ^ sign
